Xinjiang Regional Program

SUMMARY

Xinjiang Regional Program is one of the unique areas in China because of its diversified culture, and geographical-natural condition. Heifer International China not only works with the needy families nearby the provincial capital, but also the nomadic and desert areas. Heifer staff and its partners closely cooperate with Uygur Muslims, Tibetan Buddhists and Tuzu to build harmony and prosperous communities through values based sustainable community development projects.

Xinjiang Regional Program covers all the projects in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and Qinghai Province . Since first dairy cattle project implemented in Turpan Prefecture of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (UAR), there have been five more projects implemented in Xinjiang UAR and Qinghai Province . Totally, more than 1,201 families have participated in Heifer's sustainable community development projects. Heifer International China has distributed dairy cattle, beef cattle, sheep, meat goad, yak and pigs to needy families.

Currently, there are 3 active projects in the region, Tibetan Area Livestock Development Consolidation Project, Snow and Rain Rehabilitation Project and Turpan Beef and Dairy Cattle. Local partners integrated the values based (Heifer's 12 cornerstones) sustainable community development approaches in the process of project implementation. The needy families, local partners together with Heifer China staff dedicate to how to improve the livelihood, capacity and the grass-root institution building in the targeted community as well.

1, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region

As the partner organization in Xinjiang UAR, the Turpan Heifer Association (THA) was established in 2003 by the needy Uygur families in two project townships, led by the former mayor of Turpan City , Mr. Tuohudi Abulimu. THA also gets the support from Academy of Animal Husbandry of Xinjiang UAR and other government extensions, such as Bureau of Animal Husbandry of Turpan Prefecture, Vet Station of Turpan Prefecture, to provide technical service and related training of animal management. In the future, Heifer International China will closely work with THA and other governmental extensions for program supporting, capacity building, related training and project implementing.
