New York Times Journalists Visited HPI China Project
On
June 11, Susan Chira, Foreign Editor of New York Times, Jim Yardley, Joseph
Kahn and Michael Zhao, journalists of New York Times Beijing Office visited
HPI China project at Dayi, accompanied by Mr. Chen Taiyong, Country Director
of HPI China.
Ms. Chira knows Hiefer Project very well and made some donation with her
two daughters before. They wanted to get an idea of how a poor rural Chinese
village looks like and to see how HPI China is going to start a project
or expand the ongoing passing on the gift project in a poor village.
They decided to visit the project with the shortest distance from Chengdu-Dayi.
They left Chengdu at 10:30 am. On the way, Mr. Chen introduced our program
and some rural situation of Sichuan to them and answered their questions
about our development and our partnership with government. They reached
one of the first recipients of HPI China, Ren Xuping's Fine Breed Rabbit
Farm in Dayi at 12:15, and were shown around there. They were amazed by
the success of Ren Xuping with Heifer's help. Then they headed to Chunming
Village, Xieyuan Township of Dayi County, where Ren Xuping was going to
pass on some rabbits over there. They visited 6 families and the school
of the village. They discussed with farmers and village leader on how
they would improve their living. Villagers all mentioned to raise rabbits
and they were highly inspired by Ren Xuping. The journalist asked farmers
a lot of questions and they were very impressed by the discussion Mr.
Chen had with the farmers. They expressed hey would pay attention to Heifer's
development in China.
