Anhui Regional Program

An unprecedented flood broke out along the Yangtze River In 1998, leaving a large number of victims in an abyss of suffering. After an in-depth investigation at the flood-attacked area, HPI China Office applied to Heifer International Headquarters for assistance and got approved soon to launch the HPI Yangtze River Flood Disaster Rehabilitation Project in 1999. This project has covered 13 Counties/Cities in Anhui , Jiangxi and Hubei Provinces .

Up to now, 5 projects have been implemented in An'hui area including HPI Yangtze River Flood Disaster Rehabilitation Project, Jiangsu goose/duck project, Anhui Women's Rabbit Project, Anhui Women Livestock Development Project and Flood Rehabilitation Project across China . These projects have covered 17 counties/cities in 5 provinces. In addition, the Liannan Yao Autonomous County Beef Cattle Project which is located in Guangdong province and supported by Heifer Hong Kong is under Anhui regional office's jurisdiction.

Through an effort of 6 years, An'hui regional office has made a great achievements. By the end of Dec, 2005, 8,065,000 RMB project found has been invested, reaching 11,033 families with 1,935,918 animals. These direct beneficiaries have passed on 1,993,024 animals to 10,689 new families. The primary project animals and poultries included pigs, beef cattle, goats, ducks, geese, honeybees, pigeons, silkworms and so on. The HPI Yangtze River Flood Disaster Rehabilitation Project won the "Passing on gift award" in 2003, and Dr.Li Ruilin, the senior consultant of HPI China, who also helped in charge of the project in Anhui area in these years, was granted the "Golden Talent" award by HPI headquarters in 2002.
